Treating Depression Without Antidepressants – A Needed Paradigm Shift?

There is a growing recognition in today’s world that antidepressants have fallen out of favor, and their common use in this century must be scrutinized due to their liabilities and limited efficacy. In recent studies, it was found that prescription drugs are now one of the top leading causes of all deaths — some say as many as one third.1 And drug-induced injuries are soaring at an alarmingly high rate as well in all ages, notably in the elderly.2,3

Understanding Root Causes of Depression

Depression is real. However, when root causes for depression are not investigated, or even considered, one might get the idea that depression is some sort of mysterious pathogen in the air that happened to land on one’s head.

However, in practical terms, there are questions we could ask that would actually open the door to understanding the symptom, before experimenting with drugs to mask or numb it. Questions like, “Are you exercising daily?” “What do you eat in a day, typically?” “Do you have any digestive problems?” “Have you been exposed to toxic chemicals in the home, at work, at school?” “Do you have toxic cleaning products in the home?” “Has there been a loss such as a loved one, a job, or any other trauma or stress event that is still bothering you?” “How is your sleep?” “Are you using recreational drugs or alcohol?” “Do you have a warm group of close friends and associates?” “Do you have mercury dental amalgams?” These may seem like common-sense questions, but in truth, they rarely get asked at a doctor’s visit. Doctors are generally rushed and are encouraged to get patients in and out of the office as quickly as possible. The quickest approach is to pull out a prescription pad and start experimenting with antidepressants.

Why Some Want to Avoid Antidepressants

Side effects

One of the main reasons people avoid antidepressants is the added stress of side effects that are associated with these medications. In many cases, it is not a good trade-off at all. A drug may make one feel slightly euphoric or emotionally numb, sometimes called emotional blunting, but then other problems develop. Sleep may become impossible, or digestive issues can affect appetite, metabolism, and can cause much discomfort. Weight gain, heart problems, suicidal thoughts, or any number of other unwanted consequences may emerge.18

Withdrawal Syndrome  

Another big drawback to antidepressant medications is the withdrawal phenomenon. When you stop taking antidepressants, a majority of people will experience reactions that can be extremely hard to tolerate. A gentle taper is the best approach, but without medical oversight, this too can be overwhelming.17

Lack of Efficacy  

A common problem with antidepressants is that they don’t work for everyone. One may end up with a cascade of new symptoms and still be troubled by the original ones. 16

Natural, Holistic Alternatives to Antidepressants

When is Medication Useful for Depression?

depression crisisIn a crisis, medication can certainly be the correct choice. When the crisis has passed, a person may choose to discontinue the medication. The medical consensus is not to try to abruptly stop medication. Gradual and supported tapering is the safest and most comfortable route to either reduce or completely eliminate medication use. Natural support for depression, insomnia, or other symptoms is a prominent feature of ATMC’s approach to managing medication and medication reduction.

Sometimes, when tapering hits an impasse, it may be necessary to revert to a previous dosage level to allow things to settle before resuming the taper at a slower rate. This is more likely to occur where tapering was attempted too aggressively, but can happen even in a slow tapering process. Sometimes, if coming off an antidepressant with a short half-life, it can be expedient to gently transition over to a medication with a longer half-life to ease the burden on the body.
