Geodon Side Effects

Geodon Side Effects

Geodon side effects, like other antipsychotic medications, negatively affect some people more than others.

Geodon belongs to the drug class called "atypical antipsychotics," which describes later versions of earlier (first generation antipsychotic) drugs. For those who cannot tolerate taking antipsychotic medication, these adverse reactions may cause a host of harmful impacts including motor function impairment and even death.

Doctors prescribe the drug most frequently where the patient presents schizophrenia, which is the original FDA approved usage for Geodon. However, doctors also prescribe antipsychotic medications for numerous other conditions, such as psychoses, delirium, depression, personality disorders, mania, bipolar disorder, and autism. The FDA has warned for some time against off-label uses of the drug, noting that Geodon links to increased frequency of infections and deaths. Drug packaging displays issued statements identifying the risks of prescribing Geodon to elderly patients, or to persons with dementia.

The psychiatric community itself describes the subject of treating mental disorders as trying to fix something when you don't know what's broken. Due to the lack of understanding of what causes psychosis, voices in the head, delusional thinking, etc., the use of pharmacological therapies have provided doctors with a "quick fix" approach which, in contemporary medicine, is considered the first line of treatment choice over more time-consuming psychotherapy models.

NIH Warnings Regarding Antipsychotics

Nevertheless, in 2011 an article published by NIH reported on severe and distinct adverse effects of atypical antipsychotic meds, naming:

  • weight gain
  • higher risk of diabetes
  • leads to metabolic-related problems
  • increased risk of mortality
  • heightened risks of cardiovascular events in elderly patients with dementia.

Trends in Prescribing Antipsychotics Like Geodon

Statistics show that practitioners prescribed adult and elderly persons at an unchanging rate between 1995 and 2005, with a slight decline after 2003. Some other trends emerged which are, if nothing else, puzzling. Doctors stopped prescribing schizophrenia patients Geodon et al. by half, especially surprising because that was the drug's initial FDA approved purpose.

However, prescriptions for children and teen rose by an astounding 800% over the same time frame. For every single youth put on drugs like Geodon in 1995, by 2005 that one had turned into eight young persons so prescribed. Over the same decade, doctors increased the number of prescriptions for bipolar adults more than sevenfold.

Common Geodon Side Effects

The most commonly reported adverse effects of Geodon include:

  • if given intramuscularly (by injection) pain at the injection site
  • drooling
  • loss of balance control
  • shuffling walk
  • involuntary twisting movements of the body
  • coughing, respiratory infection
  • flu-like symptoms
  • ticks or other uncontrolled movements of the face, head, neck
  • restless legs syndrome
  • akathisia (relentless compulsion to keep moving, rocking, cannot sit still)
  • muscle trembling, tremors, spasms
  • inability to blink or move the eyes
  • difficulty speaking
  • nervousness, anxiety, fear
  • sour stomach, indigestion, nausea

Side Effects of Geodon Impact Quality of Life

Persons with a history of taking medications that cause such harsh effects may find that the drugs have impacted their quality of life beyond their initial symptoms which led to seeking treatment. But it can be difficult to withdraw from prescription drugs without help. Doctors are, in the main, untrained in how to safely taper their patients, and unwilling or unable to help. Unfortunately, the patient may feel trapped, with no solutions to the problem.
