Remeron Side Effects

Remeron Side Effects

Remeron side effects can reduce the quality of life, often having a paradoxical effect upon depression, according to studies.

This atypical antidepressant medication works in ways that are not fully understood, though studies reveal specific neurochemical impacts that have been attributed to the drug. One such effect is described vaguely in pharmacological literature as enhanced serotonergic and adrenergic activity. Since antidepressants do not create serotonin, or adrenaline, we can assume that the enhancement referred to must mean these neurochemicals are interfered with, with no actual nutritional restoration or tangible correction achieved.

Antidepressant drugs force excitatory neurochemicals and hormones (such as serotonin and adrenaline) to stay out in the synapses, where they can produce a temporary "lift" effect. However, the problem is akin to robbing Peter to pay Paul, in that these neurotransmitters will eventually degrade and become unusable, leaving a deficit. It would follow that depleted neurochemicals that are designed to regulate mood, and other functions will prompt paradoxical side effects to begin.

Remeron and Increased Suicidality

Doctors prescribe Remeron for post-traumatic disorder, major depressive disorder, and a host of other symptoms.  One especially troubling side effect is increased suicidality, for which the FDA was forced to place a black box warning on its packaging. The risk for increased suicidal thinking and behavior showed this to be most pronounced in children, teens and young adults to age 24. There were actual suicides reported during the adult trials, but no reported deaths in the under 25 range, even though the suicidal thoughts were shown to be more prevalent in the younger participants.

Remeron and Serotonin Syndrome

Remeron, like all antidepressants, causes serotonin syndrome when the serotonin is made overactive. When this occurs, the person can experience many warning signs, such as a sudden high fever, racing heart, irregular heartbeat, tremors, coma, hallucinations, slurred speech, muscle ticks and jerking motions, unconsciousness, and other severe reactions. Should these occur,  immediately transport to an emergency medical setting to avoid possible fatality.

Most Commonly Reported Side Effects for Remeron:

  • Akathisia (relentless internal unease, inability to sit or stand still, extreme distress)
  • Increased depression, suicidality
  • Drowsiness, sleepiness, somnolence
  • Dizziness
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Irritability
  • Hostility
  • Agitation
  • Aggressiveness
  • Impulsivity
